Self-help groups in India have their roots in the Self-Empower Women Association (SEWA), which Ella Bhatt founded in 1972 with the intention of increasing the income of low-income and independent women workers.Through SHG Bank Linkage Project (SBLP), NABARD and the Reserve Bank of India permitted SHGs to create savings bank accounts in banks.
