The volume offers an in-depth historiographical reflection on Francesco Domenico Guerrazzi, a symbolic figure of the Tuscan democracy of the Risorgimento. Born in 1804, despite having studied and graduated in Law at the University of Pisa, he always cultivated other interests, both literary and political. His moment of greatest fame and power coincided with the formation of the Tuscan triumvirate, with Montanelli and Mazzoni, during the revolts of 1848. For a few days, then, from the end of March to 12 April 1849 - the date of the return of the Grand Duke - he exercised dictatorial powers trying to aid the grand ducal restoration in the most peaceful way possible. The assembly he created was dissolved in 1949, and he underwent a trial for treason which resulted in his conviction. He was imprisoned for a long time in Italy and then forced into exile, from which he returned only in 1856. He died in his hermitage in Cecina in September 1873.
