This book explores the importance of informal financial inclusion in Senegal, with a particular focus on tontines, a form of rotating savings and credit system widely used in West Africa. Tontines play a crucial role in household financing, particularly for those with limited access to formal financial institutions. The book relies on quantitative analysis, using data collected from Senegalese households by the Agence Nationale de Statistique et de Démographie (ANSD), to identify the socio-economic and socio-demographic factors influencing their participation in tontines. In addition, this book highlights the importance of informal mechanisms as a lever for financial inclusion in contexts where traditional institutions struggle to meet people's needs. It also puts forward recommendations for improving the articulation between formal and informal financial inclusion, in order to maximize their impact on economic and social development.
