The following research question on the topic of match fixing in sport was chosen: 'To what extent are preventive measures needed - in Austrian law, taking into account the legal situation in Germany - to combat betting fraud, and would an international ban on betting be feasible?' I would like to begin by highlighting the fundamental problem of match fixing in international sport. One cannot help feeling that this is a global problem that cannot be easily solved by national legislators. This raises the question of whether the signs of the times have been recognised too late and whether only marginal damage control is now possible. The term 'match fixing' means that the course or outcome of a sporting competition is manipulated. This term has developed over time from 'match manipulation.' The most common variants involve manipulating players or referees. The internet has taken this form of manipulation to a whole new level, which must be curbed.
