My book describes my upbringing and how it prepared me for my journey in the civil rights movement during the 1960s and as leader of the Knoxville NAACP during the1990s and the gains we made for minorities in Knoxville, TN.
Dewey W. Roberts, II was born in 1945 to Dewey W. and Edna D. Roberts, at the end of World War II. He has four siblings: Gwendolyn, Sam, Reginald, and Charles. Attended Eastport Elementary, then Vine Middle School, and graduated from Austin High School in September 1963. Dewey, II began attending Tennessee State University in the fall of 1963 and was part of the famous "Aristocrat of Bands" for three years. Dewey, II worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority from 1968 to 1973. Dewey, II received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Tennessee in 1971. Upon graduation, Dewey, II worked as a counselor at the Tennessee Technology Center in Knoxville, retiring after 36 years. Dewey, II co-founded the Committee for the Development of the Black Community, the TVA Minority Investment Forum, and the TVA Minority Employees Association. Dewey, II was elected President of the Knoxville Branch NAACP in 1990 and served until 2004.
