These two novels are part of Scott's Waverley Novels series, set against the backdrop of 18th-century Scotland. Old Mortality explores the Covenanters' rebellion and the struggles between religious factions, while The Heart of Midlothian follows Jeanie Deans, a woman of great moral integrity, as she seeks justice for her sister in a story intertwined with political and social unrest. Both novels highlight Scott's ability to blend historical events with rich character development.

Autorenporträt
Walter Scott and Napoleon were born two years apart on 15 August (1771 and 1796 respectively). Napoleon single-handedly created modern warfare, but Scott did the same for adventure stories and modern history. He lived in Scotland and was regularly paid US$ 1.5 million per book with books being translated simultaneously in many languages.
