Oxidative stress is the root cause of many degenerative diseases like arthritis, with osteoarthritis being the most common. While advancements in the medical field still soar, natural remedies like spices, rich in phytochemicals with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, are effective. Aniseed treatment decreased lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation, markers of oxidative stress, improved antioxidant enzyme activities, and increased non-enzymatic antioxidants. It also improved hematological parameters in arthritis patients. Additionally, aniseeds increased calcium, decreased alkaline phosphatase, and lowered erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), which are typically elevated in arthritis. Negative serological tests, such as Anti-streptolysin O titre and C-reactive protein, indicated the absence of infection. Renal and liver function tests confirmed the safety of aniseed supplementation. The beneficial effect of aniseeds results from the synergistic action of bioactive compounds, providing protection against oxidative stress-induced diseases like arthritis when consumed regularly.
