The Polish Biographical Archive (PAB I) with the Supplement and the Polish Biographical Archive. Series II (PAB II) contain biographical articles on men and women who have shaped the politics, business, scholarship and culture of Poland from the 8th century to the end of the 20 century. The individuals covered lived and were influential within the entire area of Polish state territory, or during the period of division, in the main Polish areas. Biographies of both Polish individuals living outside Poland and foreigners living in Poland are also included. In cooperation with Polish and German libraries it was possible to evaluate unique biographical sources, many of which are very difficult to gain access to. Thus, for the first time in the history of historical-biographical information on Poland, extensive historical material has been published in a single work. A total of 430 sources in 1,185 volumes, published between the 17th century and the end of the 20th century were evaluated, and biographies on 143,710 persons were put together. The second, cumulated and enlarged edition of the Polish Biographical Index (PIB) has six volumes, providing access to an alphabetically arranged list of 280,350 biographical entries filmed on the 1,208 microfiches of the Polish Biographical Archive, the Polish Biographical Archive. Supplement and the Polish Biographical Archive. Series II. In addition to the main entries, the PAB contains cross-references to names with different written forms. As the Polish Biographical Index is an Index to PAB I and PAB II, the user can tell at a glance whether or not any particular individual appears in the Archive, and if so, where the information is to be found. The Index specifies every individualâ??s name with his/her biographical dates and profession. References to the exact locations of the entries in the PAB I and PAB II plus the abbreviated titles of the biographical sources used are also given. A key to the abbreviations used is provided. Primarily, the Polish Biographical Index serves as a register to the PAB I and PAB II. Thanks to its highly condensed form, it greatly aids the search for and selection of individuals listed in the Archive. Furthermore, as a work in its own right, the Index represents a valuable tool for biographical research. Thus, it is of inestimable value where the Polish Biographical Archive is not at hand. The Polish Biographical Index provides its user with direct access to the biographicalsource material; both the original works in printed form and the microfiches of the PAB I and PAB II. It therefore constitutes an essential reference work for anybody interested in the history of Poland, whether for private, genealogical or academic purposes.
