Whatever the role played by the international community in resolving conflicts, the importance attached to issues of poverty, gender and development disparities is of geostrategic importance. The planet's survival depends on the proper preservation, maintenance and distribution of resources. Poverty, terrorism, conflict, war and the race for weapons of mass destruction are all linked to resources. The race for resources and nuclear weapons is the main source of planetary and political instability. Inequalities and poverty are creating new migratory phenomena, and fertile ground for the outbreak of conflicts. We need to rethink a new form of development, through the design and implementation of innovative development programs, based on poverty-sensitive assessments, sustainable resource management, and protection of the environment and ecosystems.
