In an increasingly unpredictable world, awareness is your first line of defense. Situational Awareness and Safe Family Travel Strategies is a civilian-focused guide to personal safety, awareness, and protection--written for everyday people, not soldiers or law enforcement officers. Drawing on decades of professional experience across emergency response, self-defense, and personal security, the author translates tactical principles into realistic, easy-to-apply strategies for modern families. This book bridges the gap between theory and daily life, showing you how to recognize potential threats before they happen, set strong boundaries, and make quick, confident decisions under pressure. Through practical examples, checklists, and family-friendly lessons, you'll gain tools to improve your awareness in every environment: At home and in your neighborhood Behind the wheel and on the road Traveling domestically or overseas Protecting your data and digital footprint while on the go Hotel and Airbnb safety strategies From understanding the hostile planning cycle to managing road rage, from carjacking prevention to de-escalation tactics, each chapter delivers actionable insight to help you stay one step ahead--without living in fear. Whether you're a parent teaching your kids to stay alert, a traveler navigating unfamiliar cities, or simply someone who wants to move through the world with confidence, this book will help you build habits of awareness that last a lifetime. This isn't another tactical manual--it's a mindset shift for everyday life. Be Prepared, Not Paranoid.
Autorenporträt
I'm Larry Betz, founder of Prepared Not Paranoid, and for decades, I've taken my family's protection, health, and security very seriously. So seriously, in fact, that my kids affectionately nicknamed me "Tactical Larry" -- a name I wear with pride. Although I don't come from a military or law enforcement background, I've spent my life in roles that demanded constant situational awareness and personal accountability. As a tow truck driver, I performed roadside recoveries and repairs under dangerous conditions. Later, working as an elevator mechanic in 1980s New York City, I operated in one of the most high-risk technical trades, where safety was non-negotiable. Both professions taught me early on: preparation and awareness are everything. I've also spent decades immersed in the world of fitness and overall physical preparedness. I hold a degree in Exercise Science, have owned and operated several gyms, including Brooklyn Athletic Club and have worked as a personal trainer and strength coach for over 20 years. My martial arts training spans multiple disciplines and has played a foundational role in my self-defense philosophy and coaching style. For years, I focused heavily on these "hard skills," believing that physical ability alone would be enough to keep my loved ones safe. But over a decade ago, my mindset shifted when I came across a book-Sentinel: Become the Agent in Charge of Your Own Protection Detail by Pat McNamara. Pat's concept of the A.I.C. the Agent In Charge of your family's security, resonated with me deeply. It helped me reframe my role, not as a warrior relying on hard skills, but as a protector focused on prevention, preparedness, awareness, and smart decision-making. That message changed everything. As I continued to evolve, I pursued high-level firearms and defensive training through respected institutions like SIG Sauer Academy, Guardian Training and Consulting, and Alpha One Tactical. I've also trained under Tony Blauer, founder of the SPEAR System, which emphasizes real-world, instinctive responses to sudden violence. In addition, I've committed to ongoing medical training to ensure I can respond effectively in both trauma and emergency situations. These experiences have only strengthened my belief that true preparedness goes far beyond any single skill set, it's a lifestyle that blends mindset, continuing education, and real-world training. I founded Prepared Not Paranoid to help others embrace that lifestyle. My mission is to empower everyday people with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to take control of their safety, their health, and their family's security, not through fear, but through responsible, proactive living. Because being prepared isn't about paranoia, it's a lifestyle.
