In Sunlight North: The Wisdom of the Arctic Wilderness, Clarence A. Crawford writes about some of his experiences in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, recalling the many ways it has shaped his life during the past forty-five years. The bulk of these chapters narrate some aspect of travel in the Arctic. Several deal with contemporary attitudes that may adversely affect the Refuge and other wilderness areas. Clarence A. Crawford, known as Clancy, was reared and educated in western Pennsylvania. He migrated to Alaska in 1970, and became a parent, teacher, wilderness traveler, and wilderness guide. He is passionate about reading, cross country skiing, cycling, coastal kayaking, backpacking, and navigating wild rivers. He is immensely pleased that his children have developed a passion for wilderness, and hopes the grandchildren will do likewise.
