This monograph examines the dynamics of socio-economic development in rural areas of the Russian-Belarusian border region in the 1990s and early 21st century. It draws attention to a number of problems in the development of rural areas caused by the socialist experiments of the 20th century and the radical market reforms of the post-Soviet period. The socio-economic transformation of rural areas has significant characteristics in Russia and Belarus. The prospects for the optimal integration of rural areas in Russia and Belarus into globalization processes are assessed. Attention is drawn to the need for rural areas to transition to sustainable development.
