Sir Travers Twiss was an English jurist and scholar who played a significant role in the development of international law during the 19th century. Born on March 19, 1809, in Marylebone, London, to parents whose names are not widely recorded, he pursued a rigorous academic path, studying at University College, Oxford. Twiss began his career in classical studies and later transitioned into law, quickly gaining recognition for his intellectual rigor. He held several prestigious academic positions, including Professor of Political Economy and Professor of International Law at Oxford. His expertise led to his appointment as Queen s Advocate-General, a senior legal adviser to the Crown in matters of international law. Throughout his career, he contributed to scholarly discussions about the legal frameworks governing nations, treaties, and sovereign rights. His legacy is closely associated with the evolution of legal thought concerning international relations, especially in the context of expanding empires and global diplomacy. He died in London on January 14, 1897, at the age of 87.
