"The data contained in this publication are based on the personal letters, documents, and sheriff receipt book of Colonel Richard Holland Gilliam. Some of the papers are personal in nature; most relate to his activities as Deputy Sheriff of Buckingham County." As Deputy Sheriff, his duties included "the serving of papers from the county court and the execution of other actions of the county government including the collection of fines, taxes, court claims and other debts. The great importance of these papers largely stems from their being the only source of information on certain activities of the county government prior to the courthouse fire of 1869. These papers date from 1825 to 1870." Papers include summons, adjudged debts, promissory notes, receipts, bonds, fines, tax assessments, and personal accounts. Approximately 1200 persons are mentioned. A brief genealogy of the Gilliam family is included. A full-name index adds to the value of this work.
