The Return - Walter de la Mare (short summary) The Return is a haunting, psychological novel about Arthur Lawford, a quiet, ordinary man who undergoes a strange and unsettling transformation after visiting a graveyard. While resting near the tomb of an 18th-century adventurer named Herbert Herbert, Lawford somehow begins to take on the dead man's appearance - and possibly his personality. As he struggles to understand what has happened to him, Lawford becomes caught between skeptical doctors, his anxious wife, and a mysterious woman who believes his change is real and meaningful. The novel blurs the line between the supernatural and psychological, exploring identity, memory, and the hidden parts of the self. It remains an eerie, slow-building study of a man who may be possessed - or may be losing his mind.
Autorenporträt
Walter John de la Mare (1873 - 1956) was an English poet, short story writer and novelist. He is probably best remembered for his works for children, for his poem "The Listeners" and for a small yet highly acclaimed selection of subtle psychological horror stories, amongst them "Seaton's Aunt" and "All Hallows". His 1921 novel Memoirs of a Midget won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction and his post-war Collected Stories for Children won the 1947 Carnegie Medal for British children's books.
