Poetry. "Sloan's passion for words - their lipstick traces and lingering inflections (as grammar would have it) - makes for a poetry of extraordinary pleasure and difficulty. The mind and ear are redirected from inherited sequence to intentional mutation. As consummate artificer, Sloan's skill and gift demand an equally rigorous reading. Her first book assumes the presence of a mature collection and takes American poetry into its next argument.
