Welcome to the cutthroat, exclusive world of extensions. Watch your back. When Rachel Nixon loses her job for looking different than people think a stylist should, she makes a bold decision. With no money, no business experience, and no guidance, she opens her own salon. Soon she invests massive amounts of time and money in education for a slickly advertised product that-turns out-literally makes people lose their hair! Demoralized and despondent, a message from her late grandmother grabs Rachel's attention: "Go to China. You're going to start a hair company." The rest is history. In The Ugly Side of Beauty, Rachel tells her truth of enduring embezzlement and betrayal, pulling aside the heavily guarded curtain of the professional beauty industry to reveal its exclusionary, predatory, and prejudiced practices. With unflinching honesty, The Ugly Side of Beauty charts her inspirational, unlikely journey from out-of-work stylist to founder, CEO, and industry leader.
