CHARLES E. DUDLEY, SR., is the last of four children born to Joseph and Julia Dudley in South Bend, Indiana. His grandparents were among the original 16 freed slaves who established the Thomas Chapel Colored Methodist Episcopal Church on the banks of the Mississippi River in Hickman, Kentucky. At the end of World War I, his parents moved to South Bend and were among the founding fathers of the Grace African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. After his father's demise, his mother became a member of the Berean Seventh-day Adventist church in South Bend and reared her children in the faith.The children were educated in the schools of South Bend; however, Charles later attended Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama and Emmanuel Missionary College (presently Andrews University) in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Educated in Seventh-day Adventist schools, he has served the church for more than fifty years: nineteen years as a pastor in Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana and Texas; and thirty-one and a half years as administrator for the South Central Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. He holds the distinction of serving as an administrator for the denomination longer than anyone in the history of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. His capable leadership is felt around the world. In addition to their children, he and his wife have adopted and helped to educate several children from other lands.He is a humanitarian, minister, church organizer, builder, promoter, innovator, writer, historian and world traveler. His columns have appeared in the Adventist Review, Southern Tidings, Ministry Magazine, Adventecho (German) Magazine and the North American Regional Voice and served as chairman for the Board of Directors and as a contributing editor of thirteen years.He sat on governing boards of the church for thirty-one plus years and observed the growth and development of the church. Dudley's four volumes outline accomplishments made by Blacks that the World Church presently enjoys. These volumes will be enlightening to members of the entire church body world-wide. They also reveal how other denominations have impacted the Seventh-day Adventist denomination.
