This book examines the linguistic diversity in contemporary spoken Irish and the values, both explicit and implicit, associated with that diversity. Produktbeschreibung
This book examines the linguistic diversity in contemporary spoken Irish and the values, both explicit and implicit, associated with that diversity. While the traditional dialects of the Gaeltacht are held in high esteem, it is argued that post-traditional language practices, which are widespread and growing, are also of particular value, even though they may not enjoy overt prestige. There is a close connection between linguistic diversity and the social values associated with it. Both are rooted in issues of identity and in how social actors understand their own roles and the roles of others in late modernity. This work also addresses the issue of attention to the linguistic diversity of the Irish language. It explores public awareness of this diversity to highlight the social significance that the community associates with it. The first chapter is theoretical, presenting a theoretical model of the work as an introduction for the reader. This chapter focuses on social theory regarding the structure of society, the role of institutional structures, and the role of individual agency within the social system. It emphasizes recent modernity theory and the interaction between society and the individual. Within this theoretical framework, the attention to linguistic diversity, as well as its connection to language shift and diversity, is discussed.

Autorenporträt
Dr. Noel Ó Murchadha is an Associate Professor in Education at Trinity College Dublin. His work as a sociolinguist focuses on investigating the conditions under which linguistic diversity is promoted, maintained, or lost. This research encompasses aspects of language policy related to minority language maintenance, revitalization, and revival, as well as pathways toward bi/multilingualism. These issues are explored both at the individual and societal levels. Dr. Ó Murchadha's current research is centered on language policy and language education policy. He has published extensively, including work on the standardization of modern Irish and perceptions of linguistic variation in Irish among teachers and students across various educational levels. He is particularly interested in the changing relationship between self and society in late modernity and how these changes interact with language.
