However, Sean was no longer there to remind her of that recommendation. Besides, it would never have occurred to her to refuse her parents' request that she house-sit for them when they were still deeply affected by the terrible tragedy that had struck them all six months earlier. Their son, Sean, Lara's brother, had died. He contracted malaria while working in Africa as an aid worker and had never recovered. It didn't seem possible that something like this could happen in the 21st century , but unfortunately, it was.
She'd been back at the family home for a week now, but Lara still expected Sean to suddenly appear, just like he used to do when they were teenagers.
Time seemed determined to make her the butt of its jokes, for sometimes one minute seemed to last an eternity, and the next was suddenly gone, leaving her feeling trapped in a sad, hopeless dream from which she could never wake.
Even though she loved her job, she was glad the term was over. Her responsibilities and duties in the library had been very arduous over the past month because every student wanted to borrow books to study. However, now that hectic period was over, she had no choice but to face her grief and the deep sorrow she felt over the loss of her brother. She didn't look forward to the long summer days with the same impatience she normally would have. The only thing she could do to get to pass the time was taking long walks with Barney, her parents' beloved dog.
She could have organized a vacation for herself when her parents returned, but she hadn't had the heart to do it. Some friends had asked her to go with them on vacation to Italy, but Lara had declined. How could she be good company for anyone when she was still deeply grieving over her brother's death?
One day, halfway through her second week at the family home, she was sitting at the kitchen table trying to eat a bowl of cereal when the doorbell rang. She jumped deeply. These days, she seemed to be scared of everything. Her brother's sudden death had made her fear that nothing good would ever happen to her or her family again.
Barney suddenly jumped up from the floor and ran toward the door, barking and wagging his tail, as if welcoming a friend or acquaintance. Lara's nerves grew even more frayed. It was eight-thirty in the morning. Who was visiting at that hour?
"For God's sake," he muttered. "It's probably just the postman..."
She stood up and walked barefoot to the front door, Barney hot on her heels. The day promised to be especially warm, and the sun was already filtering brightly through the stained-glass window that adorned the door. Lara shielded her eyes with one hand and stared intently at the shadow looming on the other side of the door. She didn't know who it was, but it wasn't the postman. The man looked official. Lara felt her stomach lurch. "Please, no more bad news..."
He cautiously opened the door.
-Good morning.
On the other side of the door stood a man with eyes so intensely blue they took her breath away. She looked at his sculpted, masculine face and the attractive dimple that adorned his chin and thought she was dreaming. She would never have believed she'd see him again, so she was completely speechless.
