George Scott, a salesman on the road during the week, keeps in touch through letters written on hotel stationery as the family spends entire summers at the lake. Both were born in the 1890s and were gifted writers, both in correspondence within the family and in published magazine pieces. Their struggles and triumphs are personal but universal, their humanity inspiring and relatable, and their actions and observations provide a window into a time period that had vastly fewer opportunities for formally recording daily family life for posterity. The next generation is represented by George and Katharine's daughter, Gloria, born in 1921, and her husband George Buzard. Their decision to tear down the old cabin and replace it with a four- season home unleashes the torrent of long-lost documents, both from the senior Scotts as well as George and Gloria's letters and college writings, A journey of familial discovery ensues for George and Gloria's children.
