"Candide" is the classic satirical novel by French author and philosopher Voltaire and was his direct rebuke to the German philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Liebniz's teachings about optimism and the belief that we are living in the "best of all possible worlds." Produktbeschreibung
"Candide" is the classic satirical novel by French author and philosopher Voltaire and was his direct rebuke to the German philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Liebniz's teachings about optimism and the belief that we are living in the "best of all possible worlds." Voltaire strongly disagreed with this outlook and so created the character of Candide, a simple man who is brought up in isolation in a sprawling castle where being optimistic was easy and natural...and then plunges his character into chaos and confusion when he is ejected from his Edenic home and cast out into the harsh reality of the real world.

Voltaire's Candide is a Job-like character who attempts to greet the world with a smile but is beset by one terrible circumstance after another, each challenge pushing him closer to abandoning his Liebnizian optimism. Through Candide, Voltaire satirizes the military, government, religion, theology and philosophy itself.

One of the most studied and revered manuscripts in history, "Candide" has become a classic of French literature and has been translated into almost every language on earth. It is presented here in it's original and unabridged format along with an Introduction and footnotes by Voltaire scholar Philip Littell.

Autorenporträt
Voltaire (1694-1778) was the pen name of François-Marie Arouet, a French author, philosopher, satirist and historian. A leading light of the Enlightenment movement, Voltaire was a fierce believer in free speech, freedom of religion and the separation of church and state. Voltaire's literary output was extraordinary. He wrote everything from plays to poems, history books to novels, scientific treatises and political essays, often to the great consternation of the government and religious leaders. (One such essay landed Voltaire in the Bastille for eleven months, after which he adopted his enigmatic nom de plume.) Due to his refusal to temper the tone of his writings to fit the times, Voltaire was often at odds with the powers that be, facing opposition from the government, censors, critics and the clergy. At one point, after insulting a member of the aristocracy, Voltaire faced another trip to the Bastille and petitioned for exile to England instead, which was granted. Voltaire wrote his magnum opus "Candide" in 1759 and it would go on to become his best-known work. Now an international literary celebrity, Voltaire spent much of his remaining years as an advocate for the oppressed and the unjustly persecuted. He died in Paris in 1778 at the age of eighty-eight.
