Elie Berthet (1815-1891) was a French writer, author of numerous adventure and historical novels, many of which were translated into Russian. Born in Limoges, he moved to Paris in 1834 and devoted himself to literature. Among his most famous works are The Beast of Gévaudan, The Bird of the Desert, The Catacombs of Paris, The Trembling Rock, The Lost Valley, The Orgers Gang and many others. This edition presents two exciting novels. The Bird of the Desert takes the reader to Australia in the 19th century, during the "gold rush". Here, in a world of unbridled greed, a nobleman finds himself at the center of a cruel game, turning into a calculating creditor, skillfully exploiting human weaknesses, tragedies and family secrets. "Child of the Forests" is a novel that anticipated the famous story of Tarzan. This journey turns into a deadly dangerous odyssey, full of encounters with wild nature, mysteries of the primitive world and trials where the strength of the spirit is more important than weapons.
