The loft above the bodega never sleeps, and tonight it finally shows its teeth.

Jack Colder and the mayor's daughter cross from late-night strategy into something messier and human-only to find out the bed has been a set the whole time. A seed-sized mic in the baseboard. A pinhole lens in the sprinkler head. Their war-room has been wired for weeks, their arguments and plans piped to the same council that's been staging kids in warehouses and scrubbed rooms under the river. The city isn't just listening to what they say. It's collecting how they look at each other and waiting to weaponize it.

They plan anyway. She gives Jack coordinates; he scrawls them on his palm. At Pier Thirty-One, he follows the familiar three-click hum to a relay box: same power pack as the church and the tunnel, now stamped with a crooked Bellwether AV sticker. In the newspaper morgue, he cracks open Cabinet B, Drawer Twelve, and finds what every fixer fears-a contact sheet from an old assignment that accidentally caught him on the edge of frame. Clean jaw. Clean ear. A.M. finally exists on paper.

They meet under the skylight with the proof between them. The city raids the pier for show, a convoy of black cars and press crews ready to praise "swift action" and an empty warehouse. Instead, the mayor's daughter climbs a truck rail, patches Jack's salvaged mic into her phone, and beats the handler to the story: her father's ownership of the pier, the kids who slept in his containers, and the fact she's not there to save him. While reporters swarm the performance raid, Jack quietly documents the relay hardware A.M. left behind.

The Bed turns a private room into contested territory. Jack and the reporter learn they can't stop the council from watching-but they can decide what gets fed to the cameras, who speaks first at the mic, and how to starve the Archivist by taking away the one thing he can't function without: ownership of the story.
