Yet there is no birth certificate proving Bosman's existence. Can you imagine how Bosman would have felt when his mother enrolled him at school, trying to explain the non existence of a birth certificate, providing various excuses from her red face to the bewondered official, while Bosman's fellow scholars would have laughed at and scoffed him, probably chanting "you were not born at all."
Not having a birth certificate would have had a devastating effect on Bosman: "Why don't they acknowledge me as a normal person, as a human being, by not registering me as such. I know I was unwanted, a love child, but am I not human and do I not deserve human treatment like every other person?" This must have led to a partial inferior complex explaining much of Bosman's make-up and later uncommitting, bohemian lifestyle and some of his questionable actions.
Angie Childs, a niece of Elisa, informed the author of this book that as the Malan family were very religious and devoted Christians, they frowned on Bosman's agnosticism and having two wives at the same time. They referred to him as a "fruit cake" and wondered whether he possibly had a dual personality.
Yet Bosman in many ways left his unfortunate background behind and probably escaped from his earthly life and circumstances whilst indulged in writing - becoming a highly acclaimed and respectable writer, even on international platforms, for which we acclaim him and are truly appreciative of. Most of his works are continuously in print.
Apart from all the accolades, there is also the Herman Charles Bosman Prize for English Literature and the Herman Charles Bosman Museum in Groot Marico, Northwest, in his honour. The Herman Charles Bosman Literary Society (HCBLS) founded on 20 March 1993, also honours him.
To rise and to perform in the manner Bosman did, sometimes in very difficult circumstances, speak of a remarkable character, determination, insight and a gift, which we must appreciate. His command of the English language, his second language after Afrikaans, and his uncanny capability of using metaphors to bring his characters and their actions to life, is unequalled. Many people in Bosman's close circle neglected their duties towards him, especially during his childhood. In this book the reader will learn about some of those people and their conduct, even up to the point where Bosman's real father is, after many years of intensive research by the author, possibly identified and exposed.
"Herman Charles Bosman - Who Fathered Me?" is a truly remarkable book, not unlike a detective novel, a welcome and valuable addition to the biographies written about him, providing much insight into Bosman's life and some of his family members' lives and actions, with a gallery of Bosman related pictures and that of his many publications included.
