Jade Evergreen and the Perils of Polybius is a new novelette in the Maidensong Magica queer magical girl universe, the setting of 2024's Magica Riot. It tells the story of a pivotal adventure in the early career of Portland's original magical girl, Jade Evergreen, in the year 1981.

This novelette is a tie-in with the Magica Riot sequel novel, Magica Riot: Full Bloom, but can also be enjoyed as a standalone magical girl story! Elements and characters from this novelette will appear again in Full Bloom in the present day.

Magica Riot and the larger Maidensong Magica universe are the creation of author Kara Buchanan, a former city planning journalist and current musician turned fiction writer.

After a dozen years writing about urban issues for various publications in her hometown, she moved to the Pacific Northwest and finally got to be her real self. Taking her love of magical girl anime, her life playing in bands, and her personal experiences dealing with gender issues, she created the Maidensong Magica setting to bring joyful, action-packed queer stories of self-discovery and adventure to the world.

She lives in a modest house with a pretty garden, with her wife and three cats.
