Alexander Krasnitsky (1859-1914) was a Russian writer and master of the historical adventure novel, whose works combine epic scope with dramatic plots. The trilogy "Rurik and the Varangians" tells the story of the birth of Rus' and the first steps toward the unification of the Slavic lands. The young king Rurik gathers a retinue around him, travels along the waterways to Lake Ilmen and Lake Ladoga, forges alliances, and engages in battles, testing the loyalty of his warriors and his own strength. "The Storm of Byzantium" unfolds the story of the clash between the Varangians and the great empire, featuring naval campaigns, battles, and secret diplomatic maneuvers. In the final part, "The Red Sun," the heroes' destinies are intertwined with the birth of a new government and the formation of a princely dynasty that will produce the legendary rulers of future Rus'. The novels bring to life trade routes, princely feuds, court intrigues, and the harsh everyday life of the northern tribes. The author shows how disparate lands coalesce into a force capable of changing the map of the world.
