The search for trust is the culmination of our research, which addresses this question (How do people decide to trust each other?). We also deliberately interviewed managers from four regions around the world-East Asia, the Middle East/East and West Asia, Latin America, and the West-because the World Bank has identified these regions as among the most important for global economic activity, and because our research questions revolved around trust and economic development. Although these regions are geographically distant, people in these different regions share a common history and worldview. Our analysis of the cultural information in Chapter Two shows that people in these regions share a common understanding of trust and the concepts of narrowness and breadth. The interview data from Chapters Three to Nine show that managers in these regions share the same decision to trust a potential business partner. We identified similarities and differences in the measures of management in these regions that made the trust decision and the key actions they took to search for information to make this decision. SEARCHING FOR TRUST IN THE GLOBAL ECONOMY JEANNE M. BRETTING TYREE D. MITCHELL You can use this book, both at work and in the workplace, to expand your understanding of how and why culture influences trust decisions. You can also use it to navigate the challenge of deciding whether to trust a potential business partner, whether that partner is from East Asia, the Middle East, South Asia, Latin America, or the West.
