Man advances materially and technologically, but he remains in need of a wide, shady oasis in whose shade he can wash away the dirt of his past, the suffering of his present, and the worries of his future. He does not reach that except by reciting the words of his Lord, the Almighty, or studying the Sunnah of His Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, or through a cheerful poem. Whoever misses out on drawing from these three sources misses out on all goodness. The evidence for that is what was narrated on the authority of Sufyan ibn Uyaynah (107-198 AH), when his nephew came to him asking for the hand of his daughter in marriage. He said to him: "You are worthy and generous." Then he said: "Sit down." So he sat down. Sufyan said to him: "My son, recite ten verses from the Qur'an." But he could not. Sufyan said: "Recite ten hadiths." But he could not. Sufyan said: "Bring ten verses of poetry." But he could not. Sufyan said: "There is no Qur'an, no hadiths, and no poetry. So on what basis should I place my daughter with you? I will not disappoint you. Take four thousand dirhams and leave the daughter." Since poetry held such a prominent position after the two revelations, it was often associated with magic. Here is the Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, accused of being a magician or a poet: (This is clearly magic) and (Rather, he is a poet). Both poetry and magic achieve a great psychological mobilization and a tremendous gathering. Hence, the temptation of the poet and the magician is purely linguistic, as they rely on language more than movement. That is, poetry is magic, but it is permissible magic. Therefore, the Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: "Indeed, some eloquence is magic, and some poetry is wisdom." (Agreed upon). This collection came to convey a group of sorrows that have taken hold of the conscience and taken their fullest shares of permissible magic, as it contains religious, political, social, and emotional... These are the truths of life, indeed, that is life, but in the hands of a collection brimming with sorrows.
