Molly Elliot Seawell was born on October 23, 1860, in Gloucester, Virginia, and died on November 15, 1916, in Washington, D.C., at the age of 56. She came from a prominent Virginia family and was the niece of U.S. President John Tyler. Her father, John Tyler Seawell, played a formative role in her intellectual development.
