Malachai's methods cause immense suffering, and his actions reveal that the boundary between life and death, maintained by the ancient Bonekeepers, is not an absolute barrier but a permeable gradient, a truth the Bonekeepers have suppressed. Kael, caught between Malachai's dangerous ambition and the Bonekeepers' rigid control, is freed during a confrontation between Malachai and the Bonekeepers that threatens the Orchard's stability and results in a Bonekeeper's death. Kael brokers a resolution where Malachai agrees to reform his practices and advise the Bonekeepers on a new approach to the liminal state, one that acknowledges and trains individuals for this space rather than suppressing it.

In a final twist, Kael realizes her own consciousness has shifted too far into the liminal state, transforming her into a living embodiment of the reformed, more permeable boundary between life and death. This transformation is presented not as a tragedy, but as an evolution, where she becomes a unique bridge between the worlds. The story concludes with the establishment of new protocols for managing the boundary, integrating Malachai's research ethically, and training others in cross-boundary perception, all thanks to Kael's intervention.
