Back then, we didn't need long lectures. We had examples. Integrity. Grit. Vision. Morals. Ambition. The blueprint was right in front of us, walking, working, surviving.
Many of those men have passed on or moved away. But what they instilled? That stayed. And though time has changed, my principles haven't. Neither have the values of a select few of my day ones who still carry those same codes into their everyday lives.
This book isn't just about nostalgia. It's about reclaiming something real. It's about honoring the men who shaped me and sharing their lessons with the world-five men in particular:
- Big D - the definition of solid.
- Uncle Bell - calm strength.
- Uncle Marvin - tough love and resilience.
- My Big Brother - complex, but grounded in realness.
- Marco - the quiet growth into manhood, done right.
There's a longer list-Big Chiefs, DP, Bread Head, Chris Walters, and others-all part of a brotherhood molded by discipline, not trends. What we chose wasn't popular-it was powerful. While the world shifted, we stuck to the code.
What you're holding is a blueprint. Not just for Black men-but for all men. This is for the young man trying to find his voice. For the grown man trying to reconnect with his roots. For the father, the brother, the son, the leader.
This is the call to return to being men. Not boys chasing approval. Not shells pretending with noise. But real men-firm, focused, disciplined, and visionary.
So to every man reading this:
Be stern. Be rooted. Earn what you have. Reject energy that drains you. And walk in the strength of who you were meant to be.
Let's get back to the basics.
