Autorenporträt
Elizabeth von Arnim (1866-1941) was a British novelist born Mary Annette Beauchamp in Sydney, Australia. Raised in England, she married Count Henning August von Arnim-Schlagenthin, a Prussian aristocrat, and lived in Germany, where her early experiences inspired her first and most famous novel, Elizabeth and Her German Garden (1898). Written with wit and irony, the book became an immediate success and established her as a leading literary voice of her time. Von Arnim's works often explored themes of female independence, marriage, and the constraints of society, blending humor with sharp social commentary. Her later novels, including The Enchanted April (1922) and Vera (1921), further showcased her keen psychological insight and elegant prose. After her husband's death, she lived in various European countries and maintained friendships with prominent writers such as H.G. Wells. Elizabeth von Arnim remains celebrated for her wit, charm, and feminist sensibility.
