Autorenporträt
Milton Johanides is the creator of the Papayiannises, a fictional Greek family who believe in standing up for what is good and right, but justice often eludes them as sinister forces near and far conspire to topple their ambitions. In The Funked-Up Artist the chief protagonist is Artie as he is remembered by his grandson Yuri Aristopoulos. Artie's achievements have become legendary in the family, his wise and witty aphorisms often quoted, but to what extent does the legend match the truth? In reality, Artie is a troubled and tormented soul, an artist without an audience and without recognition. He is betrayed, robbed of the love of his life and of the priceless El Greco gem which was gifted to him. Everything he attempts goes wrong and he must somehow learn the lessons life is trying to teach him if he has any hope of turning things around. Milton Johanides writes with authority about Greece and Cyprus and about life growing up as an immigrant in the UK. His stories are full of angst-ridden characters who struggle to put their talents to good use. Jealousy, betrayal, lost faith and unrequited passion are all common themes. Behind the psychology and philosophy of his novels however is an over-arching power whom the characters call God who seems to be the one in charge!
