The only way to survive the harsh and dangerous country is to stick together. The Sievers family had staked their claims on both sides of Black Creek just north of Blackman Falls in Upper Canada. Grant Sievers is considered the head of the family, retired from the 12th Militia with the rank of Major. He is recommissioned into the militia as Lieutenant Colonel Grant Sievers when the war of 1812 breaks out. His job is to guard the mouth of Kettle Creek from the invading Americans. A favorite spot they used for smuggling guns.
Lucas Sievers, Grant's brother, was a trapper before settling down with his wife and family. Because he knows the country and is friends with some of the Indians, and just as dangerous, he spies on the Americans. Then he reports back to General Brooks. But when Sam is kidnapped by the Americans and sold into slavery, Lucas can think of nothing else except to save his son. General Brooks spares Lucas for one month during the war to find him. But when he returns emptyhanded, General Brooks makes it clear that Lucas must now wait until the end of the war to find Sam. Lucas recruits his Ojibwa brother, Night Wind to help him.
Sam feels lucky, serving under General Isaac Brock and becoming the messenger between him and Tecumseh. After their deaths, Sam's life turns for the worst. He is sold into slavery. He has several masters, the meanest is Robert Spenser. When Sam can't pull his weight in the cotton fields, Spenser has him whipped. He turns Sam into a stud. His job is to impregnate as many of his slave women as possible. Eventually, Sam escapes with the help of the Underground Railroad. By this time, his father is heading south to find him.
Johnny Sievers, Grant's son, is stationed at Fort George under Major Hammond of B Division of the 12th Militia. Johnny is shot during one of the battles and recuperates in the doctor's house. After he recovers, he sneaks in and out of the doctor's daughter's bedroom. After the war, he forgets about her and returns home to marry someone else.
Even though Adam, Grant's youngest son, doesn't fight any battles during the war, his a more personal one. His commanding officer takes advantage of a young teenager far from home. Adam's job is to repair ships damaged in the war. When he is alone Lieutenant Leeway would order Adam to satisfy his sexual needs. To disobey an officer was punishment by death. Adam saw only one way out of this nightmare, kill his commanding officer.
