"You're crazy. I'd say even obsessed. Just accept it. That woman is gone. Maybe she was just passing through."
Darr Fortune looked at his brother Nick, with whom he was eating at SusieMae's cafeteria.
-Thanks for the comfort.
Nick smiled.
-That's why you wanted me to come live here again, right? To comfort you when you needed it.
"Yes, of course," Darr replied.
He was the youngest of five siblings, ten years younger than the eldest, JR, but he didn't need anyone to comfort him. He was as strong as any of his four brothers.
-Of course, of course, I just wanted you to come here to comfort me. Nothing to do with the Foundation.
"You wanted me to take over the Foundation so I'd have time to run around playing with matches and rescuing damsels," Nick joked, flipping through the daily menu. "Forget that girl. You need to stop chasing her."
"I'm not chasing her," Darr denied unconvincingly. "I just want to make sure she's okay. I remind you, I pulled her out of a burning building."
"I remind you, that was two weeks ago. We all know you're a hero, although, to be honest, I still don't understand why you insist on going into burning buildings when everyone else wants out," Nick joked, adjusting his glasses and looking at the note his brother had been given. "Certainly, whoever wrote this doesn't know the difference between sevens and ones. And what is that last number? An eight?" "Devaney wrote it," Darr replied, taking the note from his brother and looking at it as well. "The only thing I understand is the street name, Windrose. The rest is intelligible. And the worst part is, Devaney doesn't remember," he concluded. His partner was a wonderful engineer, but a crazy head for details.
-He doesn't even remember who called to leave the address.
Darr was certain it hadn't been anyone from the hospital, as they had to respect their patients' confidentiality. It was likely one of the taxi drivers he'd spoken to and offered a good amount of money to find the person who had driven Barbara Burton home from the hospital when she'd requested voluntary discharge upon arrival.
-What I'm telling you is, you're obsessed. You should focus on the captain's exam.
Darr preferred not to comment on the matter. Nick grabbed his empty coffee cup and looked at the waitress at the bar.
-Hey, darling, do you have anything warm over there?
The gorgeous woman in question was Lorena, one of the bartenders. After grabbing a steaming pot of coffee, she approached their table and refilled both of their cups, all the while keeping an eye on Nick. Darr wasn't surprised in the least. His brother had just arrived at Red Rock, and he'd been there for years.
"I heard you work at the Fortune Foundation," he said. "And that you're a financial analyst. I expect Red Rock will seem pretty boring to you after living in Los Angeles."
"If Darr has done well here, and it seems he has, I'm sure I'll do even better because I do things better than my little brother," Nick replied in an amused tone.
"Oh, yeah?" Lorena smiled. "Everything? We'll have to try that." "Lorena, lunch at five," SusieMae called out at that moment.
from the kitchen.
"See you later, handsome," the waitress said goodbye as she walked away.
-Maybe Red Rock is more fun than I thought.
- Nick commented.
