When a burned-out light artist finally steps into the spotlight she built for everyone else, the only person who has always seen her clearly is the best friend who might be her greatest risk-and her safest home.

Riley Holt is very good at holding the sky up for other people. In her coastal hometown of Harborview, she is the quiet architect behind the Constellation, a winter light grid that hangs thousands of anonymous wishes over the harbor. Under those lights, neighbors cry, confess and fall in love. Behind them, Riley works herself to the edge, convinced that if she ever stops, everything she has built will crash.

Noah, the arts center's technical manager and Riley's long-time best friend, sees what the town does not. He sees the late-night shaking hands, the emergency fixes, the way she apologies for taking up space. He also sees something he has never dared name: the way his world has slowly arranged itself around her, until her laughter feels like his favourite kind of light. For years, he has kept those feelings folded away, determined not to risk the safest connection he has ever known.

When the Constellation goes viral and an international river festival in Greybridge invites Riley to create a new piece, she is offered something she has never allowed herself to want-a chance to step fully into her own vision, far from the expectations of home. Saying yes means designing a sound-to-light installation along a strange river and, for the first time, putting her own limits at the centre of a project. It also means leaving Harborview, and Noah, behind for six demanding weeks.

In Greybridge, as her Riverlines installation slowly turns recorded city sounds into moving threads of light along the water's edge, Riley begins to test new ways of living: asking for help, saying no, and admitting when fear is steering her decisions. Yet every success echoes back to Harborview and to the man who stood under the original grid and asked what the sky would look like if their friendship lit it.

When Noah steps out of the crowd on opening night, their carefully balanced friendship shifts for good. Back home, with the harbour once again ordinary and a shared future suddenly on the table, Riley has to face the question she has avoided all her life: is she willing to believe that she can be visible and loved in the same breath.

Set between a working harbour and a restless river, "When Our Friendship Lit the Sky" is a heartfelt friends-to-lovers romance about burnout, boundaries and the kind of love that insists you do not have to choose between your work and your own well-being.
