William Butler Yeats

Der irische Dichter William Butler Yeats (* Dublin 1865, † Roquebrune 1939) veröffentlichte ab 1887 vor allem lyrische Werke, bevor er erste Dramen verfasste. Er war Mitbegründer des Irish Theaters und verfasste einen Großteil der dort aufgeführten Stücke. Der irischen Kultur zugewandt, behandeln Dramen wie "Gräfin Cathleen" (1892) und "Das Wunschland des Herzens" (1894) irische Legenden. Später folgten experimentellere Stücke. Den Nobelpreis für Literatur erhielt Yeats 1923 hauptsächlich für sein dramatisches Werk. Als noch bedeutender gilt heute vielen sein späteres lyrisches Werk, darunter "The Tower" (1928) oder "The Winding Stair and Other Poems" (1933). Yeats gilt als einer der wichtigsten Schriftsteller englischer Sprache des 20. Jahrhunderts.
