Thornton Jenkins Hains (1866-1953) was an American writer and sea novelist, best known for his maritime adventure stories. He was born in Washington, D.C., and became widely recognized for his vivid depictions of life at sea. Hains was also involved in a notorious legal case in which he was convicted of the murder of William Annis, a crime that deeply impacted his life and career. In addition to his literary works, Hains wrote under the pen name Mayn Clew Garnett. His novels often focused on the thrilling and dangerous aspects of naval life, with many of his stories centered around wrecking crews, sailors, and shipwrecks. He enjoyed a lengthy career, with his works capturing the imagination of readers who were fascinated by the sea and its inherent dangers. In his later years, Hains lived in Portsmouth, Virginia, where he passed away at the age of 86. Despite the scandal surrounding his personal life, his contributions to American sea literature remain notable. His writing, rich in adventure and nautical lore, continues to be remembered today.
