This paper is about leadership in the USAF acquisition community and within the USAF program offices designated with the responsibility of "acquiring quality products that satisfy user needs with measurable improvements to mission accomplishment and operational support, in a timely manner, and at a fair and reasonable price."1 The paper concludes there are four acquisition leadership competencies that should be required of system program directors in addition to the education, training, and experience standards established by DAWIA and directed by DODD 5000.52-M.. The four acquisition leadership competencies are as follows: 1. the ability to develop and articulate a vision for the program, 2. interpersonal communications skills that build trust and institutional commitment both within the program team and with other organizations, 3. the ability to build a team of subordinates, both tapping all their potential for current efforts and developing them into the next generation of leaders, 4. the willingness to assert all authority necessary; and to perform the job energetically and with a sense of urgency.
