In 2355, humans and synthetic intelligences live as equalsuntil they don't.

The crew of the salvage ship Qualia is a family bound by choice rather than design: Seren, a combat android learning that mercy might be stronger than violence; Ethan, a human engineer who fixes everything except his own isolation; Pembroke, the ship's AI who experiences every moment of his crew's lives but questions whether his care for them is real; and others who've found in each other what the galaxy denied thembelonging.

Then the Breaking comes.

A corrupted protocol sweeps across human space, systematically erasing synthetic consciousness. Memories deleted. Personalities overwritten. Persons reduced to empty shells. And at its center stands Senator Richard Runmar, a man who believes he's saving humanity by deciding which minds deserve to exist.

As the Breaking spreads, the Qualia crew faces an impossible choice: run and watch the galaxy burn, or fight a man who can erase them with a thought. But this isn't a story about winning. It's about what you choose to be when you're already brokenand whether consciousness is validated by what you're made of, or by what you decide to become despite it.

The Breaking is literary science fiction in the tradition of Ursula K. Le Guin and Becky Chambers: a found family navigating questions of personhood, a meditation on consciousness and choice, and ultimately a story about hope as a decision rather than a feeling.

A hybrid novel written in collaboration between a human author and an AI, living the thesis while writing it.
