This book began as research, attempting to rediscover historical facts to teach while conducting workshops for all ages. As a poet every bit of information you consume has the innate ability to become the subject of your next work. This is the third book in the trilogy of black books. The first "The Black Book of Black, second "Steel Black", culminating with this one title "The Lost Book of Black." I can't recall ever being this excited about writing, or reading any of my work. This book took time, it is called legacy edition because it is dedicated to my sons, daughters, who are still with us and my mother, father, mother in law and two of my best friends who I call my honored ancestors. I'm at a loss to describe the content as anything other than my interpretation of history as I read it, see it and live it. You can't be black in America and not fear for your life. You will not be able to not pay attention to the number of videos that surface of another unarmed person of color is unalived by protectors. Then comes the questions. Why should anyone care about the past? Why was he resisting? I think there is a bit of truth in the one saying I hear repeated quite frequently, you know the one about history having to repeat itself. No matter how many before me attempted to share the truth, you could not know how the truth will tug at your soul until you find a way to release it. When asked; why I tend to always write black, no answer needed. If you are paying attention to the number of black bodies awaiting heaven's entry; you would hurriedly write black too. This book is all about love. You will not know love until you love everyone around you. Those who despise you, the ones who stopped speaking, friends who forgot their title, family, the ones considering you enemy of the blood. I'm getting there, I feel it in my chest, in my pen, in my throat. This book is a series of love poems, I mean life poems, I mean living works. I don't know how to explain what matters, when everything around you, in you, said to you, everything you see and read actually matters. What do you write as an explanation then?
Autorenporträt
AJ Houston is the son of Jimmie Jay and Birdie Lee Houston. He is the middle child with an older brother and sister and two younger sisters. He would say he has been a writer, poet all of his life. After memorizing all of the Dr. Suess books his mother read to him, he believed Dr. Suess created all of his characters from nothing, from thought. He spends his days with pen and paper attempting to discover his nothings to create everything from. "A poem should not say, but be." Is a quote from Ars Poetica gifted him by his high school English teacher, he has carried with him as a motto. One of his favorite quotes he has penned is, "if a picture is worth a thousand words each poem should be worth a thousand pictures". The description of writing and painting has to be the same process is the goal he offers to students in his create it writing classes. Creating a formidable follow through with everyday is his answer to anyone pouting writers block or being stuck in pause while writing. This is the ninth book published by Not Just Alphabets with the name AJ Houston as author. It is a privilege and a goal to publish enough books to be considered the author of his personal library, which would mean he has to publish at least 5 books a year.
