Autorenporträt
Derek Sowers was raised in California and has lived in San Francisco for over thirty-five years, where many of his stories take place. As a film school graduate focused on screenwriting and directing, his literary writing style evolved to be visually immersive and emotionally charged. He loves creating characters that experience the grand sweep of emotion strongly and deeply, with the hope that his readers feel the same. Derek's work is often described as wistful but hopeful. He leans into themes close to his heart, particularly those involving self-sacrifice and the search for individual purpose. His characters grow within an evolving story and express their vulnerability as well as their strength. Even when a narrative turns dark, there's often a spark of light to be found. Derek believes in the Hopeful Romantic and the Reluctant Hero, and he enjoys crafting a compelling conflict arc and an emotionally satisfying resolution. Derek is a fan of open-world videogames, time-travel stories, adult animation, and playtime with his cat, Cirrus. He considers himself an unqualified cat person, ready to make the sweetest (or sourest) kitty his cuddle buddy, even when the odds are against him. His employment history has run the gamut from film making to hospitality to customer service, exposing him to varied work environments and to people of unique and noteworthy backgrounds. If there's one thing he's learned from his time here on earth, it's that despite our differences, everyone's experience is worthy of story and song-you just gotta know how to tell it.
