Mac Maharaj became active in the struggle in 1953 when he was a student. He joined the SACP in 1958 and became a founder member of the anti-apartheid movement in the UK. He served a twelve-year sentence on Robben Island from 1965 to 1976. He was appointed joint secretary of CODESA, the Multi-Party Negotiating Forum and the Transitional Executive Council. He served in the first democratic cabinet and retired from active politics at the end of his term in 1999. President Zuma appointed him special envoy in 2009 and spokesman from 2011 to 2015, when he retired.
