Olive Gilbert was a writer best known for her role in transcribing and editing the autobiography of Sojourner Truth, The Narrative of Sojourner Truth. Though less prominent than her collaborator, Gilbert's contribution to the preservation of Truth s powerful life story was significant. She worked closely with Truth to bring her experiences as a formerly enslaved woman and her advocacy for abolition and women s rights to the public. Gilbert s role as an editor allowed Truth s narrative to be shared more widely, reaching audiences who might not have otherwise been exposed to Truth's compelling story. Sojourner Truth (born Isabella Baumfree, 1797 1883) was an American abolitionist and activist for African-American civil rights, women's rights, and alcohol temperance. Born into slavery in Rifton, New York, Truth escaped with her infant daughter in 1826 and went on to become one of the most influential voices in the abolitionist and women s rights movements. She advocated for equality, justice, and the end of slavery, delivering powerful speeches across the United States, with her most famous speech being "Ain t I a Woman?" which challenged societal norms about race and gender.
