Set in the north of England, the story revolves around a Siberian Tiger which has been kept illegally since it was stolen as a cub; eventually it escapes and kills its keeper. The resulting mayhem as it ravages the northern counties killing at random, necessitates in the authorities employing a big game hunter Rubens van Nicce, to track and kill it. However this tiger is different, it thinks and reasons like humans. It outwits the hunter employed to kill it and kills him instead. After the death of the hunter, it is left to an ex sniper now a tiger conservationist Jim Foster, a vet from the local Safari Park, June Rainbow, and two police officers, Detective Sergent Staines and Detective Constable Shaw to track and kill, or capture the cat. As the complex relationships between the protagonists evolve, tensions mount within the group, which creates discord and danger.
