Interpol Officer Oddi Vilhjálmsson is the product of a cold, stark upbringing in rural Iceland. Memories of childhood abuse, family dysfunction, and tragedy compel him to leave the local police force and accept a career with Interpol. He is now stationed in Manchester, UK, investigating some of the most complex international crimes and collaborating with local authorities. He excels despite his foreign ways and inability to fit in with his colleagues. The shadows of his past still haunt him, setting him apart from others, but his isolation and hopeless cynicism have yielded the sharpest of intuition. He remains emotionally and socially stunted as he gaslights himself into thinking he wants this prestigious career. He wants to help victims achieve justice, even if he dislikes humankind as a whole.
For Vilhjálmsson, the only thing that offers a respite from the paradox of his life is heavy metal music. One Icelandic band, Auxotrophy, consistently induces the greatest cathartic release necessary for his stability. In a way, wholly out of character for the stoic Vilhjálmsson, he has idolized the band members, who are now a contentious group of middle-aged misfits, embarking on possibly their last tour.
His investigation of an international human trafficking ring is sidelined when Auxotrophy's Acolytes of the Afterdeath tour is mired in the vilest of controversy. Innocent people are being murdered; their bodies desecrated and publicly displayed in the tour cities to recreate the band's disturbing album covers. Many are accusing Auxotrophy of committing the crimes, or at the very least, sanctioning them for publicity. Vilhjálmsson cannot conceive that the band whose lyrics spoke to him and pulled him time and time again from his bouts of adolescent depression is capable of such evil. He must know the truth, even if it means risking everything.
