Autorenporträt
Paul Dering's unique perspective on design leadership emerges from his multifaceted journey through the digital product landscape. Beginning his career in 2003 as a web designer/developer in London, he built a strong technical foundation while working with numerous agencies and clients. As he progressed through roles in facilities management, travel & tourism, and direct mail marketing, he developed a distinctive ability to balance creative and technical needs effectively.A pivotal career shift occurred in 2015 when Dering transitioned from front-end development in the UK to UX design in the US, setting him on the path toward design leadership. Over the past decade, he has grown from a technical practitioner to a design leader who builds and guides teams across continents. Today, he leads a global design team at a multinational logistics organization, transforming how companies approach design challenges. What sets Dering apart is his systems thinking approach-seeing not just screens, but interconnected structures that encompass databases, APIs, technical constraints, mental models, and human emotion. This holistic view became a critical leadership asset as technology and user expectations became increasingly intertwined.Beyond his corporate experience, Dering maintains active creative pursuits as an electronic music producer, vidcast producer, and award-nominated podcaster. These seemingly unrelated creative endeavors provide him with fresh perspectives on team dynamics, creative flow, and the balance between structure and innovation-insights he brings to his design leadership practice.Dering's leadership philosophy centers on connection: bridging disciplines early to create shared ownership, building psychological safety that enables innovation, and creating frameworks where user value and business value reinforce each other. Through his writing, speaking engagements, and mentorship, he continues to advocate for design leadership that transcends traditional boundaries to create meaningful impact.
