Pat Flanagan, U.S.Army John at heart is a US Army grunt who risked everything to fight with American soldiers. -Bing West, Former Assistant Secretary of Defense, Marine combat veteran and New York Times bestselling author A wonderful account of exceptional service by one of the many great "terps" who were the unsung heroes of the post-9/11 wars. We could not have operated without these talented, selfless battlefield interpreters. They not only translated from the local language to English and vice versa, they also interpreted the context and situation on the ground for our young men and women on the frontlines of the fighting. What they did was truly invaluable, and this book conveys that very vividly. Autorenporträt
Nasirullah "John" Safi was born and raised in the war-torn country of Afghanistan under the Taliban regime. While many schools were closed at that time due to radicalism and extremism, he had a desire to always learn more from a very young age. He began a path to acquire an education no matter how hard the road was. He bounced back and forth between Madrassas (religious school) and homeschooling to fulfill the dream of becoming a medical doctor, a profession that Nasirullah Safi and his mother chose because she suffered from chronic illness, and he wanted to help her. Unfortunately, attending Madrassas wouldn't help him achieve his goals. In 2001, the U.S.-led coalition began the war on terror that not only changed his life for the better, it improved the lives of millions of Afghan men, women, and children as well. Nasirullah Safi joined the U.S. mission as an interpreter/translator and cultural advisor in his teens and served both Afghanistan and the United States for many years with dedication and enthusiasm. He worked for both U.S. military personnel and civilians working in other government agencies before he immigrated to the United States of America. Nasirullah John Safi graduated with degrees in Journalism and recently earned a Science degree from Chemeketa C College. Safi is a multilingual U.S. resident who lives in Oregon. His father was a history teacher, and his mother was preliterate; both worked on a small farm deep in the Hindu Kush mountains of eastern Afghanistan. Nasirullah John Safi became interested in writing after sharing his story as an interpreter with his American friends in Martha's Vineyard, MA. He has written numerous articles and conducted interviews with both national and international media. He has also been invited to various platforms, including universities, schools, colleges, and companies, to share his story and talk about trauma. He was invited to Duke University to speak about policy and what went wrong in Afghanistan.
