This book begins with a family setting whereby a young couple is expecting a newborn baby. The baby is given the name Okayesu, which means "belonging to Yesu', and he becomes the main character. As he grows, the relationship between him (Okayesu) and his father (Amiri) becomes almost nonexistent. This is where his grandfather (Mr Jali) teaches him lessons that intend on making him a responsible man. However, Okayesu learns more from his neighbor (Malcolm), and he becomes like a father to him. In the township of Medupi, Okayesu is exposed to the inequality, poverty and unemployment, which challenges many young people in the country. In essence, this book is an attempt to shape the ideal African community whereby children can have a decent upbringing and access to knowledge that allows them to explore their dreams.
